‘BETWEEN THE COMBS’ WITH LIZZ HOUSER

“Who are you and what brought you to this industry?”

My name is Lizz and I’ve been IN LOVE with the beauty industry since I was a little kid.  Playing with hair and makeup my whole life, doing all my friends hair and makeup in middle and high school without evening realizing it would become my career.  My grandma was a stylist in the 50s and 60s and really introduced me to the world of big hair and glitter and then that love just continued to evolve into my full time passion and career.

“What are your big 3?”

AQUARIUS SUN (duh), Taurus moon, and Capricorn rising.

“What are your pronouns and how do you identify?”

She/Her identify as a lady

“What is your toxic trait?”

I am TRULY a workaholic,  I love doing what I do so much I forget to rest and step back a little.

“If you weren’t doing hair, what would you be doing?”

I really wanted to get a degree in art history and become a museum curator.

“What is your biggest ick?”

bad breath

“What impression do you want to leave on this industry?”

I want my fellow stylist to know and acknowledge how much impact they have on their community.  Creating a safe space for all different walks of life to come together in the name of self expression.  We help people see themselves in their most authentic beautiful light.  We are so intimately taking care of people and connecting with them on such a deep and vulnerable level.

“If you were casted on a reality TV show, which would it be?”

SIGN ME UP FOR REAL WORLD x ROAD RULES! I was obsessed with that show growing up and loved the will challenges they did.

“What, to you, is the most rewarding factor of being in a ‘people’ industry?”

My answer is kind of funny on this one but I really value the ability to touch people.  Human touch has changed so much as the tech industry grows so fast.  We’ve lost a lot of in person human connection and I think I really appreciate that I get to safely and physically interact with people.   I know sometimes that the massage during the shampoo or the hug at the end of the appointment is one of the most rewarding parts of my career.

“What year did you start in the industry?”

I got licensed in 2012

“What do you specialize in?”

Haircutting and education! I love all types of haircutting, from precision to razor work and everything in between.  Education has become my second love in this industry, I love sharing with all stylists in the industry and collaborating about how we look at hair, learning and sharing new techniques builds confidence in all of us, no matter where we are in our career.

“If you could shadow anyone in the industry for a day who would you choose and why?”

VIDAL SASSOON!!! The Godfather of haircutting. I have always deeply admired the system and theory of haircutting that he created in the 60’s. Without him we would not have the world of hair that we have today. I would love to have had the opportunity of shadow him. He was incredibly disciplined in his work ethic which I find so inspiring
