‘BETWEEN THE COMBS’ WITH HOLLY TOMITA
“Who are you and what brought you to this industry?”
I am HOLLY HAIR! What brought me to the beauty industry is my passion for making people feel beautiful. I’ve always had an eye for detail and an appreciation for aesthetics, which naturally led me to pursue a career where I could enhance people’s confidence and self-expression. The joy I experience from helping clients discover their unique styles and see themselves in a new light is what truly fuels my dedication to this work.
“What are your big 3?”
Aquarius Sun, Sagittarius Moon, Leo Rising!
“What are your pronouns and how do you identify?”
I identify as She/Her
“What is your toxic trait?”
My toxic trait is probably my perfectionism. I’m so dedicated to crafting the perfect look for each client that sometimes I can be really hard on myself when things don’t go exactly as planned. My attention to detail is one of my strengths, but it can also make it difficult to let go and accept that not everything has to be flawless.
“If you weren’t doing hair, what would you be doing?”
If I weren’t doing hair, I could see myself gravitating toward a field that still allows me to tap into my passion for beauty, creativity, and the psychological aspects of personal appearance. I might explore careers in psychology, counseling, or even social work, where understanding human behavior and enhancing self-esteem is central. Alternatively, I could consider roles in fashion or marketing, where the psychological impact of beauty and style plays a significant role. Anything that combines my love for aesthetics with my interest in how appearance affects self-perception would likely appeal to me.
“What is your biggest ick?”
My biggest “ick” is when people lack authenticity or self-awareness, especially in a field like beauty where personal expression is key. I really value genuine connections, and it’s off-putting when someone tries to fit into a mold or doesn’t embrace their unique features. This feeling extends to clients or trends that feel forced or superficial.
“What impression do you want to leave on this industry?”
In the beauty industry, I want to leave the impression that true beauty comes form authenticity and self-acceptance. I strive to empower my clients to embrace their unique features and feel confident in their own skin. I aim to be recognized for my ability to create personalized looks that reflect individual styles and lifestyles. Ultimately, I want to inspire others to appreciate the psychological aspect of beauty and how it can positively impact self-esteem and personal expression.
“If you were casted on a reality TV show, which would it be?”
The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives……( and no I am not mormon)
“What, to you, is the most rewarding factor of being in a ‘people’ industry?”
The most sustainable and rewarding factor of being in the people-focused industry, like beauty, is the ability to make a positive impact on someone’s self-esteem and confidence. Each interaction offers the chance to uplift and empower individuals, helping them see their unique beauty. Building lasting relationships with clients and witnessing their transformations, both in appearance and attitude, creates a deep sense of fulfillment. This connection not only fosters loyalty but also enriches my own experience in the industry, reminding me of the powerful role beauty plays in self-expression and mental well being.
“What year did you start in the industry?”
I started in the beauty industry in 2006 with makeup and got licensed in cosmetology in 2008.
“What do you specialize in?”
I specialize in color and crafting the perfect look for each person. I focus on understanding my clients’ overall style, lifestyle, natural features, hair texture, and personal goals to create personalized and flattering hairstyles.
“if you could shadow anyone in the industry for a day, who would you choose and why?”
If I could shadow anyone in the beauty industry, dead or alive, it would be Vidal Sassoon. His innovative approach to hair cutting and styling revolutionized the industry, and I admire his philosophy of creating looks that enhance a person’s natural beauty. Learning from him would provide invaluable insights into the artistry and technique behind hair design, as well as his perspective on the importance of individuality in beauty. Plus, his passion for education and mentoring others aligns with my own values in the industry.
